THE National Capital District Governor’s Christmas Cup tournament was launched last Friday at the Kone Tigers Oval and is set to run through the festive period from Dec 22-31.
Tournament director Bosky Koke confirmed that 34 teams would take part in this year’s competition.
Koke said more than 50 teams had shown interest but organisers decided for 34 and all have completed the registration process.
“This is an annual tournament which is into its 15th season, that is run specifically for players and clubs and their fans from different competitions in the city to participate in an activity that celebrates Christmas as well as rugby league,” Koke said.
“We are fortunate to have the continuous support of Governor Powes Parkop and we appreciate the support from his office.”
He said Parkop would allocate K100,000 for prizes for the top six teams and for administration.
Consolation prizes would also be awarded to the teams that missed out on the finals in a gesture consistent with the Christmas spirit.
The NCD Governor’s Cup had seen many high profile players including Kumuls and Digicel Cup talent participate as coaches, trainers, team managers and mentors.
The tournament was also a boon for the surrounding communities providing vendors the opportunity to sell their wares over the eight days.
