THE National Capital District Governor’s Cup heads into its quarterfinals today following the completion of the elimination finals (top-16) yesterday.
Reigning champions Border Storm registered a 10-6 win over FSS City Bulls with five-eighth David Joseph setting the pace for his side to score two tries via Jeremiah Luke and Josh Erico.
Bulls, under skipper Houston Nen, were able to score a lone try through halfback Manu Luii, however, they were out of time as Border Storm held on to book a date with last year’s losing finalists QPR Colts.
Meanwhile, Morata Bullets face Mapex GH Eagles after their 12-0 win over H6 Knights.
Bullets coach Warren Metafo praised his side for an impressive performance.
“Besides lock Junior Manda, we don’t have experienced or representative players,” he said.
“But I think it’s the effort from everyone to follow our captain Charlie Manu and that’s something I’m proud of.”
The other quarterfinals will see Freeway Bumpers play Savaka Souths Brothers and Toks Mafuka Eels face City Red Backs. Tournament director Simon Nuabo said due to timing, the quarterfinals would end today and the semifinals pushed back to Sunday.
“We initially planned to have matches on Thursday but out of respect for the late Sir Mekere Morauta, we will have no games and Friday is a public holiday,” he said.
