NATIONAL Capital District Governor’s Cup reigning champions Border Storm kept their finals hopes alive after knocking out Two-Eight-Nine Gamblers in the qualifying final at the Kaugere Rugby League Oval yesterday.
The Storm advance to today’s elimination final for a shot at the quarterfinals following an unbeaten start to the tournament.
They scored in the opening 10 minutes with centre Gideon Ben slicing through for an unconverted try to give the Storm a 4-0 lead at halftime.
Gamblers, under Central Dabaris pair Junior Belo (halfback) and Adam Korave (second-rower), put together a strong second-half attack but they fell short with two disallowed tries.
The Storm responded on the right edge with forward Joe Timbi scoring another unconverted try for an 8-0 lead.
Quick play from the ruck saw Korave cross over to score the Gamblers’ only try right on fulltime with his teammate Kennedy Juria adding the extras.
“We have a good mix of boys,” Storm coach Paul Wani said.
“We want to retain title but that depends on how bad we want it.
“It’s a mix of talents here, not only from our team but from all the teams, so there’ll be some interesting games ahead.”
Meanwhile, Savaka South Brothers registered a 12-4 win over Garakoni Dogs in their qualifying final.
Brothers advance to today’s elimination final where the top-eight teams will be decided.
