Governors Cup unearthing talents, says director Nuabo

THE National Capital District Governor’s Cup has provided talent for Digicel Cup franchises over the years and will continue to do so, an official says.
Tournament director Simon Nuabo said reigning Digicel Cup champions the Hela Wigmen had plucked youngster Judah Rimbu from obscurity and allowed the teenager to develop and become their championship winning five-eighth while rugged Wigmen forward Jeffrey Robert also caught the scout’s eye playing in the offseason competition.
Both men are current SP Hunters train-on squad members and are likely to be included in coach Matthew Church’s final squad for the 2021 Intrust Super Cup season.
Nuabo told The National that Robert and Rimbu played for Border Storm last year and were subsequently picked up by the Wigmen and went on to win a premiership in their rookie seasons.
“The Governor’s Cup is the perfect marketing platform for hidden talents and Judah Rimbu and Jeffrey Robert are great examples of what this tournament can produce,” Nuabo said.
“There are others that have been scouted over the years and are playing in Digicel Cup teams and now we have a young kid like Judah making the Hunters and it’s such a good story.”
Nuabo commended NCD Governor Powes Parkop for his support and patronage of the competition since 2007.
He said the main idea was to give players who did not get a chance to show their talents and skills, a platform.
Nuabo said Governor Parkop wanted the tournament to be a feeder competition for the city’s flagship team, the Port Moresby Vipers, but other Digicel Cup teams have also benefited from the tournament.
Meanwhile, Nuabo said the tournament had engaged more youths in the city and helped curb problems.
