THE Government has a clear target to create 10,000 jobs in a year, says Treasurer Ian Ling-Stuckey.
Ling-Stuckey told The National when responding to queries that the Government had a target growth rate of at least five per cent a year for the non-resource part of the economy.
He said this would also create at least a 5 per cent increase in jobs as job growth tracked economic growth when done well and would make up for some of this previous poor performance.
“The Government has set a clear target to create 10,000 jobs a year to rectify this situation,” Ling-Stuckey
“Unfortunately we have also been contending with the global Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic since March 2020.
“The Marape Government swiftly responded with protecting the budget and protecting the economy.
“This Government’s action protected the jobs of doctors and nurses, policemen and teachers while providing stimulus to business through the Connect PNG programme.
“The Government’s actions explain why, as opposed to suffering huge job losses like many other countries during Covid, our non-resource economy in fact increased, added one per cent, to employment from March 2020 to March 2021.”
