Govt allocates K200mil for election debts

ACTING Electoral Commissioner Simon Sinai says the Government has allocated K200 million to the Electoral Commission to settle outstanding debts from the 2012 and 2017 national elections.
He said the Government did not want any election-related unsettled debts heading into the 2022 general election.
Sinai said the Electoral Commission was not given its full complement of funding for the 2017 elections and was now left with debts that needed to be settled.
He said the debt needed to be settled in order to ensure smooth running of next year’s election.
Sinai said the Government had challenged his office to deliver a debt-free 2022 election.
He appealed to service providers around the country not to commit or engage any services to the Electoral Commission as yet because there was an election programme that would be followed.
Sinai said all interested service providers needed to be registered at the Electoral Commission headquarters to be engaged in the election operations.
Meanwhile, Sinai said the main challenge of the election planning process was to identify issues in the administrative and security procedure to enable the delivery of a fair and safe election.
