IN order to stimulate the economy, post-Covid-19 period, the Government is aiming to provide subsidy support to other trucking, shipping and airline companies in 2021.
This is according to Minister for Finance and caretaker Minister for National Planning and Monitoring (DNPM) Rainbo Paita, who reiterated that the support was for existing, experienced and established local service providers with a view to roll-out this assistance to other centres in the country.
“Initially, this was to ensure cash income generation at the producers’ level, and among buying and transport agents and to ensure Port Moresby has sufficient supply and affordable prices for fresh produce and vegetables,” he said.
“The impact of this freight subsidy in shipping, trucking and aviation will revitalise and ensure a continuous supply of fresh produce and vegetables.
“The aim of this intervention is to stimulate the economy.
“In the period post-Covid-19, this initiative aimed to establish the operational framework for economic recovery and growth,” Paita said.
“Ultimately, the National Planning and Monitoring Department, in consultation with relevant Government stakeholders, will use the experience and lessons learnt to develop comprehensive freight subsidy policy and programme guidelines for the country.”
