INTERNAL Security Minister Peter Tsiamalili Jr says that by 2025, all Papua New Guineans should be electronically registered.
Tsiamalili, who is also the minister in charge of the National Identification (NID) programme, said he was confident that with the upgraded storage server and improved hardware that captures biometric including facial recognition and eye scan, the Government would be able to register 95 per cent of the population.
This comes shortly after Prime Minister James Marape said that the country would be adopting India’s electronic voting system and wanted to ensure that every citizen was electronically registered by 2025, for the country’s 50th anniversary.
Tsiamalili said his team was working tirelessly to ensure every citizen had access to necessary tools and resources needed to register for NID.
“We understand that this is an ambitious goal, but it is one that we firmly believe is necessary for the future of our country,” he said.
“Not only would it streamline the voting process and make it more efficient, but it would also help to reduce fraud and ensure that every vote was counted accurately.
“Additionally, it would make it easier for citizens to access Government services and receive support.”
Tsiamalili said that to speed up registration across the country, his department was working closely with local communities to ensure that everyone had access to the necessary resources.
