GOVERNOR Allan Bird says an exercise to relocate displaced Murik Lake settlers in Wewak town to Angoram has begun.
He said yesterday more than 600 men, women and children who had lived at the Basis were being transported to the Marienberg station.
Bird said that from Marienberg station, the Angoram District Development Authority (DDA) would take charge.
A recent fight between these settlers and Mengar villagers across the Wewak town bay resulted in 124 houses burnt and seven deaths.
Bird blamed the incident on homebrew consumption and discouraged young people from consuming it.
“Homebrew has sparked so many social problems in our province.
“I call upon all community leaders to take control of your young people and ensure that they do not consume homebrew and disrupt peace in the communities.”
He commended deputy governor David Kausik, provincial administrator Samson Torovi, provincial police commander Supt Albert Beli and all parties involved in brokering peace following several days of fighting.
