Govt releases K100mil tuition subsidy for second quarter

THE Government has released K100 million to schools as part of the tuition fee subsidy for the second quarter of the academic year.
Education Minster Jimmy Uguro told The National that other payments would be released after talks with the Treasury Department which had paid out K122 million to schools in January.
The total for the year would be around K486 million – part of the Government’s policy to share the burden of school fees with parents.
The same amount was allocated last year. The two components are the school operations and functional grant of K389 million (80 per cent) and a commodity component of K97 million (20 per cent).
The Government contributes 62 per cent of the total fees and the parents pay 37 per cent.
Meanwhile, Uguro said there was no provision for Covid-19 funds sought by schools to buy personal protective equipment (PPEs) for students and teachers.
Uguro said schools should provide PPEs and other health services for students and staff.
