Govt reviewing senior positions of SOEs, depts

THE Government is moving ahead with a review of all senior positions in state-owned entities as part of a reform it is undertaking, says State Enterprise Minister Sasindran Muthuvel.
Muthuvel was responding to the recent sacking of a senior officer in a shareholding company.
He said Prime Minister James Marape had recently announced the review of all positions in the state-owned entities and the civil service.
It includes heads of departments and board members.
Marape pointed out the influence of the wantok system which had seen “political appointments” made in some high positions.
He prefers to see people appointed on qualification and merit, mobilising best talents.
He wants to see “the best persons” sitting on the boards and heading departments “to ensure we achieve optimum results from the various organisations”.
The door will be opened to everyone to apply for the positions of department heads and board members when they are advertised.
He hopes that through the “merit-based process”, they would put together the best PNG brains in those positions.
He said by next year, the “best Papua New Guineans” would be sitting in those positions and driving the sectors to achieve development for the people.

  • Thank you Honorable PM, Wantok System is killing the country.
With appointments based on Merits we would surely see change.
I urge the good people of PNG to also take noted that it would take time too for the new appointees to settle down and carry on their responsibilities. Patience…

  • At last ! Way to go Marape/ Steven Government. Consider people with expertise from the Private sector as well. Especially in key economic departments like Petroleum, Agriculture etc
But please fast track this process before next budget sitting
