The signing of an agreement between the Government and the United Nations development programme will bolster efforts to address the impacts of climate change.
It was delivered under the Asian Development Bank-funded building resilience to climate change project.
It will help communities in atolls and coastal areas improve food security, prepare for climate-driven natural disasters and reduce their vulnerabilities.
Dirk Wagener, the UNDP resident representative in PNG said the partnership “is an important achievement between the climate change and development authority and UNDP to address challenges faced by climate change in the most vulnerable communities”.
“UNDP is working with local communities and stakeholders in providing sustainable solutions to support communities to be resilient and adoptable to the impacts of climate change,” Wagener said.
Knowledge sharing will also underline the interventions to strengthen PNG’s efforts in tackling climate change.
Rural communities face the most impact of climate change through king tides, rising sea levels, natural disasters such as floods, and changing and increasingly unpredictable weather patterns. These causes and consequences of climate change stretch far beyond individuals and governments.
For countries like PNG, actions against climate actions require continued and long-term commitment. Effective efforts require local, national and international approach.
