Govt urged to introduce projects in communities

SELF-HELP projects need to be introduced at the community and family level and be supported financially, a local businesswoman in East New Britain says.
Rabaul copra and cocoa buyer and exporter Rosemary Sovek said the government, along with stakeholders, had to work together to bring life skills training to communities.
“I commend the Kokonas Indastri Koperesen (KIK), division of agriculture and livestock (DAL) and other organisations and encourage them to continue with their good work in carrying out training and small projects and want you to continue with the good job,” she said.
Sovek said few communities in ENB had tapped into coconut replanting and coconut downstream processing making soap and virgin oil.
“Copra has been around for 100 years and it has been the main source of income for many people especially in the rural areas,” she said.
“Stakeholders must be supported well so that they continue to carry out trainings to all the wards in the province.”
Sovek said the national and provincial governments needed to support such initiatives at the community level and this would in turn help in service delivery.
“Let us all work together to help our communities in this challenging time that the coronavirus has caused,” she said.
Sovek added that in order to grow the local economy all roads needed to be fixed to improve access for people, goods and services.
