Govt urged to support

THE Government needs to recognise global achievements of Cricket Papua New Guinea and provide more support to the national teams, says Motu-Koita Assembly chairman Dadi Toka Jr.
“There are more than 100 countries that play cricket, but PNG is (ranked) in the top-20, so the Government and its sponsors need to take note,” he said.
“We need to provide more support to this sport, so we can achieve more moving forward.”
Toka made these remarks when welcoming the Twenty-20 (T20) World Cup trophy earlier this week on behalf of the National Capital District Commission (NCDC).
He highlighted the achievements of the national men’s and women’s teams.
“The achievements from the recent participation by the men’s team in the T20 World Cup (in 2020) were phenomenal,” he said.
“I think the country was proud of Cricket PNG and its players’ achievements to the point where a lot of sponsors took notice and more importantly the Government took notice.
“They (Government) need to take notice in the future because cricket is a sport that we’ve been playing for more than 130 years. On behalf of the city, I acknowledge the International Cricket Council for choosing Port Moresby as one of the 20 destinations for the trophy tour.
“We have started discussions with Cricket PNG on how NCDC can assist in providing more facilities and resources.
“Let’s work together towards providing more facilities and opportunity for our people to develop the sport.”
