Foreign Affairs Minister Rimbink Pato says the department is in consultation with the Chinese Embassy to establish the circumstances surrounding the death of a Papua New Guinea student in China.
Pato said the full circumstances of the death, and what the PNG Government would do, were matters they were yet to discuss.
He said he had received a brief and would release an official statement later.
“As soon as I read the brief, I will call on the relatives to sit with them to discuss what we plan to do,” Pato said.
“This is a very sensitive matter and it is important for the media to not publish any wrongdoing on anyone’s part.
“At such a difficult time like this, when someone passes on overseas, it is important for us not to discuss all manner of issues in the media.
“We must have some respect for the relatives, ensure that we stand with them and take steps that are required as a matter of protocol to ensure that the body returns to PNG as soon as possible.”
