A GRADE 8 student was killed in a fight between players from two rugby teams at Kaugere Oval, in Port Moresby, on Sunday, according to police.
Badili police station commander Bill Werake said they were investigating.
The student was identified as Sopas Philip, originally from Enga and Southern Highlands.
Kaugere Youth Association president Alphonse Raiava said Philip was not part of a team.
He said the fight continued to Kilakila.
“Police fired shots into the air when the fighting got worse to separate the teams but they did not stop fighting,” he said.
“The fight spread to Kilakila. He (Philip) was hit with a knife on the neck there.
“He was taken to the Port Moresby General Hospital where he died.”
Raiava said Philp was the headboy of the primary school he attended.
“He received his grade 8 certificate last week,” he said.
“He was killed at Kilakila where he resides with his parents.”
Werake has urged students to stay with their parents during the holidays.
He said days leading up to Christmas were not safe.
