FORMER Kumul Bal Numapo says grassroots rugby league is a crucial part of many districts in the Highlands region and the Sine-Suwai Rugby Football League, which heads into its third round of matches this week, is an example of how sport has given youth a meaningful way of expressing themselves in the rural community.

Numapo commended the league as well as the players such as former Kumul winger Michael Mark, who had returned to give something back to the people.

The competition, which affiliated last month to the PNGRFL, has 12 clubs and is sponsored by the Simbu Provincial Government.

League president Sam Sakido Dom said the emphasis on sport and support from the provincial government had made a difference for the young people of the Sinesine-Yongomugl District.

“Rugby league is growing in the country and we are happy to see most young people with potential participating,” Dom said. Teams: Maldoa Brothers, Masul Eagles, Koge Wizards, Frog Country, Kebai Muruks, K Spiders, NK Rangers, Sipaku Panthers, Zigs Brothers, Koge Titans, Kuapege Cowboys, Kool Rats.
