A GROUP of people who met at the Kandep station on Friday has called on Sir Michael Somare to voluntarily retire from politics.
They said Sir Michael had contributed greatly during his 43 years in politics but had now grown old and young leaders were “using him to put their hands in the nation’s coffers”.
They said they did not understand why Sir Michael was still fighting to remain in government.
Peter Piuk, from Lai constituency, said people in the district were happy with the O’Neill government because they had seen many changes in a short time.
Piuk said they had seen a drop in the prices of goods, more money allocated to districts, free education, school fee subsidy, pocket allowances for students and tax exemption for low income earners.
He said the country was blessed with many natural resources but previous governments had failed to deliver such services.
He said the country needed well-educated young leaders to manage its resources and deliver services to the people.
