THE East New Britain Council of Women is engaged in an awareness programme to prepare women for a more productive year at all levels of government.

Last week, president Alice Pawa visited women leaders in two local level governments in Rabaul district and educated them on the difference between a mandated women leader and one appointed by politicians.

Pawa said women had been left out in a lot of programmes and the council was determined to establish its network at the beginning of this year before advancing into other programmes anticipated for the women in the province.

She advised all wards to ensure they had women representatives in the ward development committees that would elect a representative to the assembly, the council or a single representative of both entities.

Pawa said the council had picked April 29 for a province-wide election of Local Council of Women representatives from all LLGs in the province.

This election will involve women representatives from all wards in the province to meet at their respective LLGs to elect their representatives for their LLGs.

She told the women that according to the National Council of Women Act, all LLGs were to have presidents for their respective local government areas and the ENBPCOW was organising an election to be conducted at all LLGs on April 29.

Pawa explained that the ENBCOW LLG representative could be either the one appointed by the LLG presidents to the LLG or one elected by the ward women’s representative.
