MEMBERS of six community-based organisations in Kabwum, Morobe, recently returned from a trip to Chimbu to learn about how they deal with conservation.
They are from the Yopno Uruwa Som (YUS) conservation area in Morobe.
They visited the members of the CBO innovative resource restoration movement and KGWan organisation in Gembolg. The exchange trip was facilitated by the tree kangaroo conservation programme.
The YUS conservation area in Kabwum is the first nationally recognised conservation area to protect the endangered Matschie’s tree kangaroo and its habitat.
Programme official Esther Nokulu who led the trip, said the visit was for the members to see the situation in Gembolg, how it was organised from the family level to the ward level and how they set up cooperatives.
“The trip was an eye opener for us,” she said.
“It showed the YUS members how our conservation area can work well.”
Nokulu said the YUS CBO representatives learnt a lot about setting up cooperatives.
