THE police cell guard who is charged with raping the “mystery woman lawyer” Helen Mark Kuipa failed to appear in the Waigani Committal Court yesterday.
The court was told that Danny Karayo, who is out on bail, had a death in his family and was unable to attend the hearing.
Earlier, police did not object to Karayo’s bail.
His lawyer had submitted that his client would be ill-treated if he went into Correctional Services custody and that he was the only one who could support his family financially.
Karayo was granted a bail of K500.
His case on March 26 was adjourned to yesterday for submissions to be made on his behalf.
Karayo is charged under section 347 (1) of the Criminal Code after Kuipa complained that Karayo had sexually penetrated her whilst being held in the Boroko cells for questioning after her arrest.
Kuipa was arrested in connection with the escape of 12 hardcore criminals, including suspects bank robber, William Nanua Kapris, from the Bomana maximum security facility on Jan 12.
Karayo was a regular member of the PNG Royal Constabulary and had been attached as a cell guard for three years.
Hearing was adjourned to May 19.
