Guards suspended over Kuipa’s alleged rape

TWO Boroko cell guards have been suspended without pay in connection with the alleged rape of Helen Kuipa, the woman held by police in connection with the Jan 12 Bomana jail breakout.
Officer in charge of the Boroko CID branch, Mark Yangen, confirmed this yesterday.
Kuipa was allegedly raped after she was arrested on Saturday and brought to Boroko police cells to be held for questioning.
Mr Yangen said the policemen were suspended without pay for an indefinite period pending the outcome of an investigation into the incident.
“At this stage, nothing much can be concluded as investigators are also still awaiting the full medical reports from doctors which we should have received today and the victim (Kuipa) today had submitted her statement which prompted this investigations to move forward,” Mr Yangen said.
Kuipa was sent for medical examination after the alleged incident last Sunday morning.
NCD metropolitan commander Chief Supt Fred Yakasa was angry and ordered an investigation when it was brought to his attention that the woman had laid a complaint of rape.
Police confirmed last night that Kuipa was being detained at the Bomana prison while investigations into her involvement in the escape continue.
She has been charged with one count of aiding the escape of a prisoner. She is expected to face 13 other charges.
Police believe she was flown from Lae to Port Moresby to play her part in an operation that had been planned for a while.
She is believed to have links with high profile prisoner escapee William Kapris.
She is in her 20s and is from a village outside Wabag in Enga province.
Of the 12 prisoners whom Helen alleged help freed from the maximum security cells in Bomana, seven have been recaptured while five are still on the run.
