Guinness appalled by string of criminal activities in Madang

NORTHERN Asst Comm Peter Guinness is appalled by a string of major criminal activities afflicting Madang despite police having stepped up crime-prevention operations for the Christmas and New Year holidays.
“Don’t leave it to us only to fight crime,” he said.
“We need a higher level of cooperation from politicians, communities, churches and companies to work with the police to stabilise the situation.
“The people must not turn a blind eye and leave it only to the police to fight crime because law and order issues are a shared responsibility, beginning in families that include parental responsibility.”
ACP Guinness said the Government also needed to step in with mechanisms on how best to address Madang’s law and order woes.
He referred to the robbery at Madang airport that saw one man killed and another two injured in a shootout with police on Monday.
Other major crimes and petty crimes that irked ACP Guinness in Madang this month were:

  • Friday, Dec 13: Private Constable Horaki from Nambaiufa in Lufa, Eastern Highlands-Chimbu, was assaulted and stabbed to death in Mildas Market just behind Jomba police station;
  • Saturday, Dec 14: Four armed pirates sank a boat in Karkar-Kubugam resulting in one death and four people going missing;
  • Tuesday, Dec 17: More than 10 armed robbers ambushed a bus on Naru Mountain between Usino-Tapo and shot dead a crew and a passenger;
  • Sunday, Dec 29: About 20 men raided Madang airport and fled with an undisclosed substantial amount of valuables and cash; and,
  • Yesterday: Armed men robbed a shop in Madang town of about K9,000 in flex cards and cash.
