GULF Komara registered their first win of the season in the Kumul Petroleum National Soccer League on Saturday after defeating Star Mountain 2-1 at the PNG Football Stadium in Port Moresby.
The round five match got off to a slow start with neither side able to score in the first half.
A more enterprising start to the second half from Gulf saw them score 20 minutes in through midfielder Numa Kila following great lead up work by Donovan Murray and Kenneth Arah.
Star Mountain were quick to respond with playmaker Danny Orim setting up forward Tau Winnie to find the back of the net for an equaliser two minutes later to bring the match back on level pegging (1-1).
Port Moresby’s humid conditions took a toll on the quality of football played with both sides finding fewer chances at goal.
A lack of urgency from Star Mountain’s backline to clear out the ball in their red zone saw Gulf’s Jordan Kaven pounce to deliver the match-winner and confirm their first win in the league.
After four straight losses since the start of competition, Gulf have now opened their scores on the point’s ladder under the guidance of coach David Aua and assistant Steven Mune, who have led a fairly young side.
