WESTERN provincial police commander Silva Sika says the move by Police Commissioner Tom Kulunga and Deputy Police Commissioner operations Simon Kauba to buy new firearms and uniforms for the border police will boost the morale of his officers.

Western, which shared a common border with Indonesia and Australia was in a very strategic location in the country.

“It’s a morale booster for our police officers here.

“It will enhance their performance in their border patrols,” Sika said.

He said it was timely for the police hierarchy to recognise their border police officers.

He said police personnel had been working in the province for a long time without good firearms and uniforms.

Sika said the government needed to beef up police operations in the border post areas of Kiunga, Ningerum and Tabubil.

He called on the government to purchase patrol boats for police to conduct border surveillance and patrol the coastlines and rivers in the international border areas between Papua New Guinea, Australia and Indonesia.
