A brace of goals from Joshua Gwae gave FC Morobe Wawens their first win in the 2018 National Soccer League in Lae on Saturday.
It was the first of the double-header which Wawens won 2-1 on a windy afternoon. In the main game Toti City flogged visitors Madang FC 7-0.
In front of hundreds of fans who packed the Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium to watch the double-header, it took almost 30 minutes before the first goal was scored.
Buang FC, who were facing the strong wind created a shocker as Yama Shong scored their first goal. With a goal in their favour, the team began to play defensive football.
But that did not hinder Wawens as they penetrated Buang’s defence through Gidix Nasa on the left flank and Ben Lapio on the right.
Wawens’ desperation to stay in contest saw captain Dallas Namuesh directing play inside Buang territory for Gwae to belt in his first to equalise three minutes before the break.
In the second half, the teams fought desperately but lacked any game structure and missed a number of opportunities.
Not wanting to let their fans down, the Wawens put their heads together to create a window for Gwae to score his second to take the lead 2-1 in the 61st minute.
They then defended strongly in the next 29 minutes to win the match and add three points to their name on the NSL tally.
Morobe Wawens 2 (Joshua Gwae 2 goals) Buang 1 (Yama Shong goal) HT: 1-1 at Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium, Lae.
