MOROBE Hammerheads dedicated their second-straight Kumul Petroleum Papua New Guinea Rugby Union Super Sevens final win to the late Deputy Prime Minister and Bulolo MP Sam Basil.
It was an emotional afternoon for the Hammerheads who played Kimbe Rebels in the Kumul Petroleum Super Sevens final at Sir Hubert Murray Stadium in Port Moresby yesterday.
The Hammerheads won 17-5 to claim the round-two trophy.
Hammerheads assistant coach Joseph Wamapiri said the team observed a moment of silence before their pool games on Saturday to show their respect to Basil.
“Before we played our pool games on Saturday we had a moment of silence to remember our great leader,” he said.
Their back-to-back win was also dedicated to Basil.
“In honour of our late leader, we dedicate this win to him,” Wamapiri said.
Basil passed away in a car accident in his electorate last week.
Wamapiri said the Hammerheads and Morobe’s rugby union community passed their condolences to Basil’s family.
“The team wish to pass our condolences and sympathy to the family at this time of their tragic loss,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Hammerheads will look to continue their superb performance as they eye a clean sweep of the series. “We’ll give the boys a break to recover,” Wamapiri said. “We will get back to training on Tuesday to polish up on some of our plays, especially in attack.
“I’m confident that the boys will continue the momentum for the remainder of the series. “We hope to be the champions of the inaugural series.” The Morobe provincial side will be looking to extend their winning run in round three.
