THE Fairfax Harbour in Port Moresby is seen by the National Research Institute as a symbolic feature for modern Papua New Guinea, according to director Charles Yala.

Yala made the remarks yesterday during a breakfast meeting in Port Moresby with executives of business houses.

He said the proposed harbour stretched from the end of Paga Hill to Tatana village and had the potential to be developed to an iconic design that would form a special feature of the capital city.

“NRI is mandated to undertake research and it is now a public policy think-tank shaping public opinions,” Yala said.

“This is one of our projects aimed at stimulating proper urban planning and development.

“So what we are doing is developing an idea, and inviting architects and urban designers to come and give their opinions on how it should be developed.

“The actual development of the Fairfax Harbour is the responsibility of the National Capital District Commission.

“Our job at NRI is to stimulate public discussion and positive thinking with the developers, Departments of Lands and to see that this is something that needs to be given a national feature.”

Institute researcher Simon Alker said several months ago, NRI had launched a competition in Papua New Guniea and overseas to solicit ideas on how Fairfax Harbour could be developed for the benefit of residents. They received 14 domestic and overseas bids many of which were innovative and futuristic and accommodate the recreational and commercial needs of growing a city around its harbour.

He said five designs had been selected.
