Heads to roll in civil service

HEADS are set to roll when the Government advertises the position of all its department heads as vacant this month.
“Selection of department heads and board members of Government organisations will merit-based. We will not entertain any lobbying,” Prime Minister James Marape said on Monday.
“The days of selecting wantoks are over.
“Wantoks have compromised the efficiency and interest of this country over time.
“We want the best (and competent) people to sit on the boards and departments to ensure that we achieve optimal results for the people and country,” he added.
Marape said that Members of Parliament (MPs) from both sides of the political divide were lobbying for their candidates to occupy the positions.
“My message to everyone is simple. Pick up an application form, apply when those advertisements appear. If you have the necessary qualifications, then you will
be successful in securing a position.
“We want the best to serve the people and country next year. I have seen enough inefficient public servants and inefficiency in the last seven years.
“I have served as prime minister for three months, seven years as finance minister and I have had a hindsight of who is who in the public service” he added.
Speaking in Parliament at the announcement of Moresby North West MP Sir Mekere Morauta joining the Government, Marape said the Government was now reassembling the political structure and would, thereafter, do the same to the public service.

  • That is the excellent idea and best way of taking PNG back. Wantok system has dumped PNG and that’s the link to what everyone talks about every now and then in every sector both private and plubic which is CORRUPTION. Good idea pm.

  • This is great for the Country. What Marape-Steven government to do now is to put in place law reforms and ensures the continuity of this new things when Government change seats.

  • This is the best way to weed out corruption, greed, wantok system and the list goes on. Taking back PNG simply means taking it back from Corrupt Politicians, Public Servants, lazy Citizen who are stealing and cheating this Nation and its people. Everyone must be transparent and Honest in the eyes of GOD.

  • Let the job to an independent recruitment agency so that recruitment can be done without fear or favour. Time for nepotism is over.

    • I have had experiences where Independent recruitment agencies have been compromised and nepotism still exist in those entitities.
      We’d rather have paliamentarians or NEC sit to screen the application themselves and decide. So far they have done a good job with such brilliant suggestions and advise so let them continue and complete it successfully.

  • Tremendous criteria, we need to change our country by stick through synopsis of recruitment requirements. In last decade we’ve experience the recession of our country due to WANTOK SYSTEM & SAVE FACE selection. Our country does not need a person who have Degree, Masters or Doctorate, in reality our country needs a man of integrity to change the PNG. Thank you PMJM for immense effort.

  • We have the best Prime Minister now with the best strategies put forward. We are now waiting to see your action which will speak louder than your words PM. Ensure that no crooks and corrupt people are recruited to head departments and organizations. As we speak some corruptions are happening in some of the govt organizations. We must weed out this through recruitment of heads on merit basis and no other means.
