HEKARI United club manager Vonnie Kapi Natto has challenged the national men’s football team to work as a team and not as individual players or clubs of the National Soccer League (NSL).
She said that following last week’s announcement of a 30-man squad, which boasts nine Hekari players.
“I congratulate all the players in the squad but my challenge to them is to work together as a team and play as a country in the Fifa World Cup qualifiers next year,” Kapi Natto told The National.
“The players deserve to be in the team because they worked hard for it.
“But now they have to be committed, disciplined and passionate about representing the country through football.
“I’ve spoken to the Hekari players and I’ve reminded them that in order for PNG to reach the highest level of football, there has to be teamwork.
“There shouldn’t be any competition between individual players or players from one club against another.
“Take the other players in the squad as your teammates because you are not going as an NSL club, you’re going as a country.”
Kapi Natto said competition between members of a club within the national squad would affect the team’s performance, so she was encouraging them to work together.
“This squad is not the final squad (as announced by PNGFA), so all national players must work harder and stay disciplined because there is not much time for preparation,” she said.
“Good luck to the players, go play as a team and make the country proud.”
