HEKARI United beat Southern Strikers 5-1 in a friendly match last Friday, as part of their preparations for the Women’s National Soccer League season kick-off this Saturday.
The Erickson Komeng-coached side led 4-0 at the break, thanks to a double by new recruit, Bougainville talent Callista Maneo and a goal each by Marie Kaipu and Marvis Singara.
Strikers converted a goal through Arnolda Dou in the second half, but they were unable to reel in Hekari as Kaipu’s second goal sealed the win for Hekari at the Papua New Guinea Football Stadium.
“It’s our fourth friendly match and we are improving every day,” Komeng told The National.
“I have some new players, so I’m trying to find the best combinations for the new season.
“But am happy with the team.”
The former PNG international said he was impressed with Maneo’s performance.
“She is a talented player from the village,” Komeng said.
“She is starting to understand the game structure and modern coaching, so she will improve a lot as the season continues.”
Meanwhile, team manager Vonnie Kapi Natto said their aim was to reach the finals after the last season’s playoffs had been shelved due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
“We brought some players from Bougainville,” she said of Maneo, Michaellynne Butuku, Christophilla Nawa and Vanessa Kauva.
“We got them straight from the villages into the league.
“They’re settling in well.
“Our aim is to win the premiership, but we’re aware that the other teams have talented players and they’ll be just as competitive as us.”
Other additions to Hekari are Amoana forward Phyllis Pala and Genesis’ Rumona Morris.
