HELA Wigmen coach Charlie Wabo has welcomed former Port Moresby Vipers halfback Tony Wemin on a mid-season transfer to the Digicel Cup side.
On his debut, Wemin partnered Judah Rimbu in the halves and helped secure a 14-6 win over Waghi Tumbe on Sunday.
The Chimbu native was only a fringe player for the Vipers with experienced playmakers Ase Boas, Karis Peter and Joel Tapie rotated in the halves.
Wabo said Wemin stepped in to cover for injured halfbacks Solomon Pokari and William Mone.
“Tony Wemin was released by the Vipers last week to come and join us,” he said.
“I am really happy with how he (Wemin) played against Waghi Tumbe.
“He really showed that he can partner well with Rimbu in the halves so it will be hard to keep him out of the 17.”
However, Wabo said Pokari could return from injury in this week’s game against the Central Dabaris which should see Wemin move elsewhere.
“This means I’d have to move Wemin to the interchange,” he said.
“He can come in off the bench and help Patrick Morea in the hooking role.
“We could also use him as a halfback off the bench.”
Meanwhile, Wabo said he was happy with his second-placed Wigmen who continue to impress in the shortened season.
“My players have been following what we have been telling them to do on the field which has seen us perform well so far,” he said.
“There are only four rounds remaining so we have to maintain the momentum.”
