Helicopters boost for border ops
PNG Defence Force (PNGDF) efforts to monitor border crossers in Western has been further strengthened with the arrival of two helicopters in Kiunga.
Maj Douglas Vavar, in a brief interview, explained that it was business as usual for the PNGDF who had been tasked to ensure that the borders were secure.
Maj Vavar said the two helicopters would be in Kiunga for seven days before they go to Vanimo to assist in the efforts there.
Provincial administrator and provincial state of emergency controller Robert Alphonse Kaiyun was grateful for the PNGDF’s efforts who had men deployed from locations in North Fly from Bankim to Bula in South Fly.
Kaiyun said the PNGDF had been working tirelessly with the provincial task force to monitor the border.
He said the presence of these assets had boosted the provincial task force’s efforts in border surveillance.
Kaiyun added that the provincial government would continue to monitor border security and strengthen health systems.
He said that the province was fighting an ‘invisible enemy’ and encouraged all partners and stakeholders to participate in the efforts in the province.

Drones would also be very useful for observing movements on this very long border.
We also need drones to help patrol the border.
It can be a expensive exercise but its vital for PNG.
