PAPUA New Guinea High Performance Sport manager Cornelius Papau has offered their services to national sports federations and associations that will be taking part in international events.
He said they were assisting the Basketball Federation of PNG, Cricket PNG and AFLPNG with their preparations.
“Long-term preparation is crucial to make sure we pace out the athletes’ training and ensure that they are prepared in advance,” Papau told The National.
“National federations that will take part in (international) events this year or in 2022 should come forward.
“We already have the Basketball Federation of PNG, AFLPNG and Cricket PNG — the Barramundis are going to this year’s T20 World Cup.
“Long-term preparation will enable athletes to be ready when they go out and be competitive around the world.”
Papau said with a field hospital set up at the Taurama Aquatic Centre to cater for Covid-19 patients, the high performance team had to move their operations to Sir John Guise Stadium.
“The space here is small but it’s a numbers game for us, so we’re working around the clock to see how many athletes will be occupying the gym,” he said.
“There are a lot of events coming up, the 2022 Commonwealth Games and Pacific Mini Games, and the 2023 Pacific Games.”
