Help for those struggling for fees

THE Tertiary Education Student Assistance Scheme (Tesas) will continue for students who score well, Prime Minister James Marape says.
He clarified that Tesas would run alongside the new Higher Education Loan Programme (Help) that would be made available in May.
“Students who score well can continue to pay their fees under the Tesas arrangement. Help is for those who are not on Tesas and those who are really struggling to pay school fees,” he said.
“The Academic Excellence Scholarships (AES) and Higher Education Contribution Assistance Scheme (Hecas) will be continued as an incentive for students who perform well academically.
“These two facilities (AES and Hecas) will continue in our universities and colleges. But for those who are not under Tesas, the fallback is the Help,” he said.
Marape also admitted that there was a lot of confusion about Help that he needed to clarify. “Help is not compulsory.
“It is a facility that we are setting up for students who need help the most.
“For parents who are employed and have the money to pay for your children’s school fees, it is fine, you do not need to get help from this programme.”
He said the loan programme (Help) was very soft. “There is an announcement out already about repaying loan after six months but we will tidy those requirements into the course for this year.
“It (Help) is meant to be easy on the Papua New Guinean students who are borrowing so they can pay throughout of their lives,” he said.

  • This a good initiative from the government to assist parents who are low income earners and those self-sponsored students who are struggling to get back into the education system. The catch now would be, how can the government recoup that loan if those students under the HELP programme cannot find employment after they complete their studies? I think there should be a balance somewhere, what the government should consider doing next is to create more job opportunities for the graduates, in that way they can repay back the money owed to the government. Just my thought!

  • That’s a great initiative from the current PMJM government.
Well done for the great help for the very poor parents.

  • Education is our citizens right . Many do not have enough to pay tertiary student fees. Programs like will help poor students in the country.
HELP is the way forward for many of us.
