THE Dunlop Trans Highway Cup kicks off in Lae tomorrow with the final to be played at the Showgrounds on April 21.
This is one of the country’s premier provincial cricket tournaments and will be run by the Lae Cricket Association.
LCA president Lakshman Upali said they had teams travelling from Western Highlands, Jiwaka, Eastern Highlands and Madang to take on the best Lae has to offer in the T20 format competition.
“This will be a very exciting week for cricket in Lae,” Upali said.
“We are expecting a good competition with games being played at Unitech and Showgrounds, free entry, so we encourage everyone to come and watch our great game.”
Hagen-based regional cricket manager Soman Gawo said: “Our team has been training for this tournament for a long time and we are ready to come down to Lae and show how good our cricketers are and I expect we will do very well.”
Cricket PNG will have their scouts at the tournament to hopefully spot some potential Barramundis or Garamuts for the future.
“It is important that we get sponsors like Dunlop, who appreciate the need to invest in cricket throughout the country and who help us run these regional tournaments bringing exposure to our game and the players,” Cricket PNG general manager Lee McDowell said.
The competition starts with the first round of games on Wednesday at the Unitech grounds.
