Homebrew adding to lawlessness

Letters

THE beginning of 2020 is already marked with unnecessary deaths and destruction of properties from all over the country.
All thanks to the product that everyone in the society wants to eradicate – the processing of homebrew or paia wara.
Last year Oro Governor Gary Juffa tried to address the homebrew situation at his province by suggesting to ban yeast.
The approach did not go down well with our mothers who relied on yeast to do flour balls, donuts or whatever type of cooking.
Other stakeholders who relied on yeast to develop their products were also affected.
Homebrew has contributed to law and order issues.
The good governor should not give up looking for other options to tackle this never ending issue.
People illegally brew this cheap liquor to make quick bucks to sustain their personal and family livelihood.
They also supply the demand in the black market who cannot afford to buy factory made liquor.
There are at least four types of yeast being sold on the shelves.
I’m not sure if I’ve missed one that is PNG made but all are imported products.
My suggestion to the governor is to ban all imported yeast and give authority only to the one manufactured locally. By manufacturing it here, we will have more control over the product.
Take this PNG made product to any laboratory, redesign it to still maintain its core functions, but when used with excessive water and other combined ingredients (especially when brewing homebrew), the product will dilute with no effect to the process.
