Homebrew production a concern

National

the increase in the production of homebrew is due to the availability of yeast on shop shelves nationwide but stopping its sale will greatly affect the bakery business, says Minister for Commerce and Industry Wera Mori.
He said unemployed mothers who struggled each day selling scones and doughnuts on the streets would also be affected.
The minister was responding to Nawae MP Kennedy Wenge in Parliament yesterday.
Wenge blamed lawlessness on youths consuming homebrew, also known as “steam” or “yawa”.
He said yeast was the key ingredient in the production and suggested a police taskforce unit to help curb the production of homebrew.
“This is a good question. I am sure that the minister for police is taking note of it as problems associated with drinking homebrew has resulted in so much destruction to lives and properties,” Mori said.
“I will discuss with the minister on how best we can work together to amicably address this urgent situation that is affecting our youths.
“We need to do something about it. If we are going to take yeast off the shelves, it will have multiple effects in the nation.
“It is not an easy solution and I cannot assure Parliament of what I will do to address it.”
Northern police commander Chief Inspector Lincoln Gerari said last August that he was seeking ways to keep it out of the province to stop or reduce crime.
Gerari organised awareness activities and worked with communities to stop youths from producing and consuming homebrew.
