Hospital continues stance against gender-based violence

THE Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) which has been attending to many cases of gender-based violence is supporting the campaign against violence perpetrated on women and girls.
This was confirmed yesterday by hospital chief executive officer Dr Paki Molumi who said justice must be served on perpetrators of gender-based violence to stop it from escalating. “The PMGH is supporting the campaign against violence against women and girls,” he said.
He said violence-related injuries seen at the emergency department “consumed many of the hospital’s resources, including surgery hours”.
He said if there were no such injuries, “we could save many resources and use them to attend to patients who genuinely have diseases”.
“The PMGH stands against all forms of violence, more so violence against women and girls because we see many of the victims at our Family Support Centre (FSC),” Dr Molumi said.
“The FSC is under-resourced to adequately address all gender and sexual violence-related issues.”
But he said it had been trying its best to help victims.
“We provide or get all the medical reports and documents and send them to the appropriate agencies to handle the cases,” he said.
“It needs the support of all the stakeholders, including law enforcement agencies to bring those perpetrators to justice.”
