People can now be diagnosed better at Sir Joseph Nombri Hospital in Chimbu with the help of two new scanners worth K5.7 million which arrived on Friday.
Doctor John Tonar, the hospital’s head of nuclear medicine, said the computed tomography (CT) scan and Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan machines would save lives.
“These life-saving equipment will not only help the people of Chimbu but will also benefit people in other Highlands provinces and around the country too,” he said. “With these machines, proper diagnosis of even the smallest diseases in the body can be made so that treatment can be made quickly.”
MRI is a medical imaging technique used in radiology to form pictures of the anatomy and the physiological processes of the body in both health and disease.
MRI scanners use strong magnetic fields, electric field gradients, and radio waves to generate images of the organs.
The CT or CAT scan allows doctors to see inside the body. It uses a combination of X-ray and computer imaging to create pictures of the organs, bones, and other tissues.
It shows more detail than an X-ray.
The machines were ordered from Chinese manufacturer Beijing Wandong Medical Technology Ltd.
Tonar said the machines would help in the detection and treatment of ailments like cancer, tumor and tuberculosis. They would be available to patients from July.
The hospital is waiting for the arrival in the country of two specialists to train doctors to use the machines.
