THE Port Moresby General Hospital has renovated its fire system to deal with any emergency, says chief executive officer Dr Umesh Gupta.
He assured the public that the hospital was equipped with detection monitors, sprinklers and fire extinguishers placed around the hospital.
“We also have fire emergency safety plans but are yet to get hospital staff to practice a drill on how to respond and what to do if the hospital catches fire.”
Gupta said they plan to have a fire training for hospital staff conducted by the PNG Fire Service.
“The Fire Department is very happy to come and train the staff. We are yet to set a date for the training,” he said.
Gupta said the hospital was prepared and could contain small fires in case of any emergency.
A member of the public, Yelkey Yaltudupe said with the recent fires in the city, hospitals must ensure that they had fire emergency plans and must train their staff.
“There are so many patients in the hospitals. Most are bed ridden. We must ensure that there is an emergency plan available to help patients to safety if a hospital catches fire.”
