Hotline for reporting corruption

PRIME Minister James Marape has directed secretary Ivan Pomaleu to establish a hotline for people to report cases of bribery and corruption in the public service.
Marape, who addressed the global launch of the Transparency International 2020 Corruption Perceptions Index yesterday, warned against bribery and extortion in the public service.
He said the hotline was open to anyone to report public servants asking for favours.
“Government service providers are asking favours from ordinary people for 10 per cent or 20 per cent payments which is not right,” he said.
“You are supposed to be serving free and not to ask for favours from politicians.
“Public servants are already paid to do their job.”
Marape said the hotline would be set up to give the opportunity for people to report such cases.
“When you don’t report, you are perpetuating corruption.
“Police and the system is there but we are not reporting it because we think it’s normal,” he said.
“It’s not normal for public servants to ask for favours.”
Marape said anyone at Treasury Haus or Vulupindi Haus who asks for favours like lunch before giving the cheque needed to be reported to the hotline.
“We want to deal with these sort of cases and Pomaleu will be responsible to ensure the hotline is set up,” he said.
Marape said he was a strong advocate to take back all the resources of PNG that had been squandered through complacency and corruption.
He said although the Independent Commission Against Corruption (Icac) Bill and the Whistleblowers Act were passed, the system needed to be put in place to competently deal with this issue.

  • Please we need that in all department too, Lands Dpt is highly into this, I lodge my title copy plus other document in for the process to be processed but it took almost 2 years of following up. Please we need to put a stop in this.

  • Very good initiative to fight corruption in the country.
Hopefully will be an effective one.

  • Thank you PM JM. Many public servants are always asking for bribes call “COLA Money’ that is true in every department. People have no choice but pay required bribes in order to have them served.

This is a bad corruption that is kiling service delivery in the country.

  • That is a good idea and the hotline number should be printed on front page of all the media outlets daily so we can report them such activities.
I’m sick of seeing officers saying, ya there is a way and you know it. It will be easier if you do the Wright thing
I wish those people should be locked up.

  • everyone saying the same thing but i wonder if any of you have done such act as giving cola money to get something even if you think it is not right.

  • That’s good news, about public servants do jobs they’re being paid for instead of asking for bribes. Good job PM.

  • Nowadays bribery and corruptional activities are mostly practiced at all levels of both government and non-government organizations. These practices are distablishing the elements of good governance, thus accountability, law and order, institutional arrangement etc.

Therefore, to restore and uphold the intergriy of our governing systems that we have, we need to report all sorts of such habits to right authorities to adress or eridicate such lunatics in possession.

Make it happen now or never!

  • Please, we need that in West New Britain Province as well. Public sevants in Kimbe also are doing this as well.

  • What is the PMJM/Government doing about ALREADY reported cases? This is Just a gimmick “ALL TALK BUT OBVIOUSLY, ZERO ACTION”
