Housing, medical and life insurance planned for public servants

Housing and medical and life insurance will become a “condition for employment” for public servants, says Public Service Minister John Sungi.
Sungi said the Government was committed to making sure the public service was receptive to change “as we bring about these reforms which, I believe, will go a long way to push public servants to do their best”.
He made the statement during a Public Service Housing and Related Policies consultation in Port Moresby, hosted by the Department of Personnel Management (DPM).
“The Housing Policy for public servants as a key policy initiative driven by the Department of Personnel Management (DPM) through a “whole of Government approach” is the best way forward to addressing the issue of housing for public servants,” he said
“From the housing policy, you will note that the “one triple P” will now become one triple P plus H.
“One person, one position, one pay and one house.”
“DPM has made great strides in pushing the housing agenda for public servants within a short period of time and I am very pleased about the milestones achieved thus far. We have done the ground breaking for portion 1212 at Bomana in September last year and I am looking forward to the cutting of the ribbon upon completion of the houses for public servants, hopefully next year. It may be a big ask but one that is achievable. I leave that challenge with you all,” he said.
Sungi said another key policy was the medical and life insurance policy.
“The Government has honoured its commitment to this very important policy for public servants and has allocated K6 million this year towards the setup of the medical and life insurance policy.
“I am informed the CEO for the Niucare Association, which is what the public service insurance company will be called has been appointed and work is set to commence to recruit the workforce for the medical and life insurance. This should set the pace for work to be done to begin the roll out of the insurance policy for all public servants.
“With the insurance, public servants will now be looked after when it comes to their health. They can access medical care from any medical institution as the life and medical insurance will be a guarantee for public servants to seek out medical care,” he said.
