Two High Performance Sport (HPS) Papua New Guinea staff are on a one-week para-sports coaching clinic in Tokyo, Japan, thanks to the Nippon Sports Science University.
The clinic is part of Japan Sports Agency’s initiative to raise the competitiveness of countries which have never participated at the Paralympic Games, and will be a pathway towards competing at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games.
HPS PNG’s para-sports coordinator Jackie Travertz, and strength and conditioning coach Meiling Choong expressed excitement and gratitude for the opportunity to rub shoulders with other Asia-Pacific coaches.
Speaking at Jackson Airport before departing, Choong said: “There’s a lot of networking that we can do (during the course).
“It’s a good opportunity to learn from some of the best coaches in the world who work with para-athletes.”
Choong also noted the fact that there was minimal knowledge on how to train athletes in the country, and encouraged those who were interested in para-sports to participate in workshops and learn as much as they could.
“I guess the best learning method is just to get out there and experience how they (para-athletes) train,” she said.
