Huawei eyes UPNG undergraduates

TWENTY students from the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) have been targeted for recruitment by Huawei Technologies Limited, human resources specialist Renee Peni says.
“Computer science and other undergraduate students attended a one-day recruitment awareness programme hosted by Huawei,” he said.
They are looking for engineers in fixed network, wireless software, telecommunications and information communications technology.
“The programme aims to recruit undergraduates in the engineering field but since UPNG does not offer engineering programmes, they are targeting computer science students and students from business, accounting and communications.”
Fourth-year business student Raymond Hagahuno, who was shortlisted for interview and aptitude test, said: “If I am selected, I hope to gain real working experience in telecommunications.
“Technology is shaping our world today both in business and in everyday live and it would be a privilege to be part of their team.”
As the course involves IT skills, one of the employment criteria is set on grade point average (GPA).
Students scoring a cumulative GPA of three and above will be considered.
When asked about the exclusion of other courses in the recruitment drive, Peni said IT was a major component of Huawei’s operations and that there were limited positions for business, accounting and communications.
