THE SP Hunters have recalled Willie Minoga, pictured, for their remaining Queensland Intrust Super Cup matches following the forward’s release from the United Kingdom’s second-tier outfit Barrow Raiders.
With five matches remaining, Hunters coach Michael Marum made the announcement after a training session at the National Football Stadium in Port Moresby on Tuesday.
Marum said Minoga, who scored the winning try in the 2017 grand final against the Sunshine Coast Falcons, had passed all tests and should make the team for round 19 next week.
Minoga, who was released due to a recurring knee injury, said he was feeling good and returning to full strength.
“Teams overseas try to avoid taking risks with regard to injuries and that’s why the Barrow Raiders management released me but I’m feeling good,” he said. “I feel much better after undergoing rehabilitation and resuming training with the Hunters.
“My knee is a little sore but after icing and resting it well, I should be back to full strength in round 19. It’s is an injury from 2016. I’ve re-injured it a few times now.
“There are only five matches remaining but I’m looking forward to playing alongside my countrymen again. The Hunters have had a rough season but hopefully we win our remaining matches to finish the year on high note.
“I’m grateful to Marum and the Hunters management for recalling me. I’ll use my experience to help the younger players.
“When I returned from the UK, Marum and the coaching staff welcomed me straight back into the team. It shows that despite being a senior player, I have a lot to offer to this team and I’m keen on doing that.”
The 13th-placed Hunters take on the Blackhawks – who are fourth on the ladder – at the Jack Manski Oval in Townsville, Australia, at 4.05pm on Saturday.
