WITH most schools into the sixth week of the academic year, students at the re-opened Huonville Primary School in Lae will be doing their best to catch up with classroom work.
The school was closed in April because of the poor conditions of the classrooms. Parents, with the help of business houses, recently completed two buildings comprising 13 classrooms.
Head teacher Willie Vilakiva was happy to welcome the students back.
“The attendance was very good today (yesterday). All the students came in,” he said.
“Our teachers were also here and by 8am they were all in their classes teaching.
“The students turned up on Monday, but we just told them to arrange their desks and chairs, and help with the last lot of gravel for the classroom floor before heading home around noon. So we are officially beginning classes today (yesterday).” He said classes would continue through the second-term break.
“Our students will be given homework and lessons to do over the weekends so that they can catch up on the lessons. We have arranged classes during the second term break and our teachers are ready for that,” he said.
