Husband accused of his hitting wife

AN elderly Tolai man appeared at the Waigani Committal Court on Monday, charged with allegedly hitting his wife with a piece of timber.
Urakamara John, 61, of Gazelle’s Wairiki No.2 village in East New Britain, was alleged to have committed the offence at Gereka village outside Port Moresby, National Capital District, causing bodily harm.
Magistrate Paul Puri Nii read John his charges, which the accused heard and understood, and adjourned the matter to April 9.
Police are now required to further investigate and prepare a hand-up brief.
John’s bail of K3,000 was extended.
It was alleged that on Feb 24, at around 5pm, John arrived home drunk, with some food from some of his colleagues.
His complainant wife, Elma Ronnie, was getting ready to leave for work.
John asked his wife to serve him the food he brought but she insisted rushing off as she would be late for work.
The accused responded by picking up a 6mm by 2mm timber and hitting his wife, which resulted in her left arm being fractured.
The accused later dropped off his wife at the hospital where she was treated.
Ronnie reported the matter to police on Feb 27 John was arrested and charged under section 340(1) of the Criminal Code Act.
