VENDORS at the Koki Fish Market are now enjoying the convenience of keeping their catch fresh, thanks to a new ice-making machine at the market.
Market manager Geelong Auma said the machine started operating on Tuesday.
“We go around spreading ice on the fish for free four times a day to keep it fresh,” he said. “This is for the vendors on the table, they do not pay extra fees, once customers come see the freshness, they are happy, they can also buy stock when going out again.
“This is convenient for vendors.”
Auma said a 2kg bag of ice was sold for K3.
A fish vendor from Hula, Alice Mala, said the new ice-making machine had helped her and other vendors.
“We used to walk all the way to the store to buy ice,” the mother of four said yesterday.
Mala is a regular at the fish market.
“I am happy as now, as I do not have to worry about it,” she said.
Moresby South MP Justin Tkatchenko said the new ice-making machine for the market produces two tons of ice a day or equivalent to 1,000 2kg ice bags a day. This is for the fisherman to keep their catch cold and fresh and for the public to buy for parties, functions,” he said.
“Some come to the Koki fish market for fresh cold ice for all occasions.”
