THE Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) has received more than K344,000 worth of life-saving medical equipment for its coronavirus (Covid-19) intensive care unit (ICU).
The equipment was donated by Kumul Petroleum Holdings Ltd (KPHL).
PMGH chief executive officer Dr Paki Molumi said the hospital had 59 beds for the Covid-19 which included 11 beds in the emergency department, a 30-bed ward and 18-bed isolation ward (of which, five were in ICU).
Dr Molumi said the hospital needed more equipment and medical supplies due to the rising number of the Covid-19 cases. “Towards the end of February and beginning of March, we were admitting about 10 cases a day which was stressing manpower in health care and the demand for consumable, drugs and equipment,” he said.
He thanked KPHL for the donation which included;
● SYRINGE pumps;
● INFUSION pumps;
● PULSE oxymetres which measure the amount of oxygen level distributed to the body; and,
● DIGITAL blood pressure machines.
“We had a few of those but due to the increasing number of cases, we are in dire need of more,” Dr Molumi said.
KPHL managing director Wapu Sonk said as part of its commitment to help improve health care for Papua New Guineans said: “We will continue to support PMGH and other hospitals in the country.
“We felt it was critical that we help the hospital, especially at the ICU where these patients are in critical conditions and need constant monitoring.
“The equipment are not only for the Covid-19 but also for ICU health care.”
Dr Molumi said yesterday marked 271 days after the first Covid-19 case was admitted to PMGH which initiated the Covid-19 response and, to date, 350 patients have recovered.
